At this Orient home, even the basement has a water view.
Listed for $2.85 million, the 2,600-square-foot custom-built home is 62 feet above sea level, situated atop a steep hill on 1.21 acres, says listing agent Alexander Aquino of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Real Estate.
The unfinished basement has six windows for sea-gazing, as well as 11-foot ceilings. The space can be finished with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a large living room space, Aquino says, leaving space for the mechanicals and the laundry.
Built in 1997, the four-bedroom, two-bath home was constructed by Bill Conway, with Aquino’s father, Anthony, a kitchen designer and craftsman, overseeing construction. Kontokosta Winery architects Samuels & Steelman designed the home, which includes a wraparound porch accessible from the first-floor bedroom and dining room, and a 20-foot covered terrace off the second-floor master bedroom suite.
“When you’re sitting on the second-floor balcony, you can see all of Connecticut as far as the horizon goes . . . into Greenport Harbor, Shelter Island and the entire bay and Orient Harbor,” he explains. “When ospreys are flying through the air with little fish in their talons, you’re looking down on them, or at eye level.”
A first-floor living room contains a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and the kitchen is filled with stainless-steel appliances, 100-year-old cherry countertops and bird’s-eye maple cabinetry, Aquino says. A second bedroom on the floor has a full bathroom and a walk-in closet, and much of the house is wired for a Bluetooth-controlled sound system.
The second floor contains one bedroom and bathroom in addition to a master suite with custom cabinetry throughout, a second quartz fireplace, an office and a walk-in closet.
On the grounds, there are 11-foot privet hedges, three varieties of wild cherry trees, perennial herbs, flowering shrubs, rose bushes and more.
