Part of $3.995M East Hampton home dates back to 1680

The owners of this historic East Hampton home did an extensive renovation, blending its antique features with striking modern design. It is on the market for $3.995 million.

When Don Ashby and his wife, Kathy, purchased the home in 2012, it was made up of three separate structures — the main house, which dates back to 1680, a house that was added on in the 1880s and a section from the early 1900s. The Ashbys lifted the house, installing a new foundation and adding a full basement, which now houses a gym, media room and an en-suite bedroom. They also removed the 20th century addition and eliminated the third floor in the oldest structure, creating a double-height ceiling master bedroom and stairway.

The couple kept almost all the original framing, and the five-bedroom home has lots of exposed wooden beams, along with contemporary touches such as a sleek kitchen with Boffi appliances an uplit staircase.

“We liked the idea of a historic house, but we wanted to make it more modern,” Don Ashby says.

The half-acre also has a heated gunite pool, gardens and two-car garage.
