$629,900 Port Jefferson home mostly owned by women

President James Polk was in the White House the year a Port Jefferson home listed for $629,900 is thought to have been built.
The house is known as the Alice Wheeler Home, and town records indicate it was built in the mid-1840s. Owner Linda Shropshire, who grew up in the house, says ownership will be going outside her family for the first time in four generations.
“What’s more interesting is that it’s nearly always been owned by women,” adds Shropshire.
Her mother, Mary Lou Stein, was the most recent resident of the home. She died in 2017 at the age of 91. Alice Wheeler was her aunt.
Only the center of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is original. The kitchen in the rear of the house was added in the 1920s and the large family room was added in the 1960s, according to information from the Port Jefferson Historical Society.
The home is on a .12-acre lot.
