The idea behind the design of this nearly finished Amagansett home is to put a modern spin on the traditional Hamptons estate. Jess Reeves of East Hampton-based Nigel Lewis Design combined traditional materials and design elements — a shingled roof, wide plank oak flooring — with a large, open floor plan and walls of windows.

“Many times, with modern design, it feels very, very stark and very Los Angeles,” says Reeves, who owned the previous house on the property. “A cool place to have a vacation, but it doesn’t necessarily fit into the Hamptons world very often.”

The 8,500-square-foot home, which is a short walk to the beach, is nearly finished. It’s on the market for $8.2 million. Along with the sprawling, 50-foot-by-30-foot living room, the house features an eat-in chef’s kitchen with custom Italian cabinetry and high-end appliances, two large master suites and four guest suites.

Outside is a 1,000-square-foot covered terrace with a fireplace and bathroom, and a little more than an acre of property with formal gardens and a Gunite pool with a spa.

The home is listed with Douglas Elliman’s Josiane Fleming.
