LOTS OF HISTORY If you want a peninsula to call your own, Davis Island — about 1,000 feet off Shore Road in Mount Sinai — is up for grabs. On the market for $1.5 million, the 1.45-acre property contains a 4,950-square-foot house with bulkhead and a floating dock. The original part of the house, a 2,500-square-foot center hall Victorian with a large front porch, was built in 1860 by Capt. Adolphus Davis, who was a local shipbuilder. Constructed with three layers of brick, the house is solid as a rock, says Denise Fischetti of Coach Realtors, who is marketing the house with Joseph McGill. “The staircase doesn’t creak,” Fischetti notes. Added onto and renovated down to the Sheetrock and mechanicals, the 14-room house features plank floors refurbished with five coats of polyurethane, four working fireplaces converted to propane gas, picture rail moldings and pocket doors “everywhere,” Fischetti says. The updated kitchen is designed with wood cabinets, granite countertops and an antique center island with black granite top, while the butler’s passage to the dining room has a sink and circa 1900 built-in leaded glass cabinets. There are five bedrooms and four bathrooms, including the master suite, which has a nursery and a bathroom with a shower, hot tub and walk-in closet. Views of Mount Sinai harbor can be seen from every room, Fischetti says, as well as from a two-story, four-car garage, where each level is 1,450 square feet. Both the kitchen and family room access the 15-by-25-foot Trex deck. Amenities include an outdoor shower. Davis’ son, Daniel, a sea captain, at one time developed some of the property into a vacation spot that offered visitors rowboat rentals, swimming facilities, a casino and a dance pavilion, Fischetti says. The island was detached from the mainland until the owners filled in the property in 1860 to connect it.
