Rockville Centre Colonial built in 1898 lists for $1.195M

This Rockville Centre Colonial, now on the market for $1.195 million, brings Southern flair to the village by design.

Originally a Victorian with a wraparound porch when built in 1898, the home’s tall, white pillars were added later to create “more of an antebellum Colonial style,” says listing agent Scott Wallace of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.

The 2,800-square-foot, five-bedroom home features hardwood floors with mahogany inlays. The living and dining room windows have decorative plantation-style shutters. An original stained-glass window remains in place near the main staircase, Wallace adds.

Other features, such as a dual staircase setup — one for the family in the foyer, which features a marble entrance, and another in the kitchen for the staff — indicate that the home was designed to accommodate domestic staff, Wallace says.

Between the dining room and kitchen, there is a butler’s pantry. Servants would stand behind a swinging door and look through a glass panel to see when their services were needed, Wallace says.

Today, the residence, which Wallace says underwent a renovation within the last decade, includes a fully finished basement, with an office, laundry room and storage. The first floor has 9-foot ceilings and includes the formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen equipped with stainless steel appliances and custom cabinetry.
