Roslyn Harbor home on market was once William Cullen Bryant's

Named Springbank for the freshwater springs on the nearby hillside, this Roslyn Harbor Colonial, on the market for $975,000, has a history that spans nearly 200 years.

Built around 1835 and later moved about 100 yards to where it stands today, the house was sold in 1868 to poet William Cullen Bryant, who then gave it to his daughter, Fanny Bryant Godwin. After Godwin's death in 1893, the house went to Minna Godwin Goddard, the poet's granddaughter. It stayed in the family until 1955.

A two-story addition with a library, bedroom and bathrooms was built by the owners in 1959, and another addition, with two offices and a rear staircase, was constructed in 2005.

"The house is very sympathetic with its additions," says listing agent Nancy Hawkins of Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty.

Set on just over an acre, the four-bedroom house with three bathrooms and a half-bath has a view of Hempstead Harbor. The surrounding property has koi ponds.
