A Roslyn Harbor mansion, now listed for $5.85 million, has eight bedrooms, 11 full bathrooms and two half-baths — and that’s not including the staff wing.
The 15,400-square-foot Georgian Revival-style residence on 3.9 acres was built in 1930 as the centerpiece of a 90-acre estate for Percy Rivington Pyne II, the son of banker, philanthropist and Princeton University beneficiary Moses Taylor Pyne.
The home was a creation of Cross & Cross, designers of the General Electric and Tiffany & Co. buildings in Manhattan, among others. There are high ceilings throughout the first floor, especially in the gold-trimmed dining room and a ballroom with marble floors, which have two-story ceilings, says listing agent Jason Friedman of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. He is co-listing with Sarah Friedman.
Spaces such as the library, sunroom and kitchen capture a homier, intimate feel.
“It’s a huge house, but it doesn’t feel it, aside from those entertaining rooms,” he adds.
A foyer with marble floors highlights the original handcrafted millwork found throughout the home. His-and-hers parlors, once a staple of formal entertaining, are nearby.
From the foyer, a staircase leads to a balcony landing on the second floor, which has the master bedroom suite and three additional bedroom suites. Three more bedrooms and full baths are situated on the first floor, along with two kitchens; the third floor features a bedroom, a studio and an office. Bathrooms are finished largely in solid marble and onyx, Friedman says.
The heavily landscaped grounds are filled with patios, fountains, walking paths and formal gardens. They have largely been preserved in the form originally designed by Beatrix Farrand, Friedman says. Her notable landscape designs include the Dumbarton Oaks Estate, the J.P. Morgan Library and the East Colonial and West gardens at the White House during the Wilson administration.
The original 90-acre estate was subdivided in 1945, with the last parcel hitting the market in 1951, Friedman says.
Notable residences run through the family — Moses Taylor Pyne’s Princeton, New Jersey, estate, Drumthwacket, is the official residence for New Jersey governors. His father, Moses Taylor, built the family fortune in part through is control of the National City Bank of New York, which later became Citibank.
