Sagaponack ranks No. 2 on 'America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes' list
When it comes to lavish living, it would be pretty hard to call Sagaponack second rate.
Yet Forbes' annual list of "America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes" puts the tiny Suffolk County village at No. 2, just behind Atherton, California, for five-digit postal codes with the highest-priced homes.
To compile the list, Altos Research said it looked at median home price data for more than 29,500 ZIP codes covering 95 percent of the population.
Atherton, ZIP 94027, came out on top with a median home price of $10,564,038; Sagaponack, ZIP 11962, was more than $3 million behind, at $7,416,538.
Forbes said Atherton had a for-sale inventory of 20 homes and the average number of days on the market was 106.
Sagaponack's inventory was 37 homes with an average of 111 days on the market.
Manhattan made the top 10 twice -- with 10012 at No. 3 and 10013 at No. 5. But Northern California, with three of ZIP codes among the top 10, had the best showing, Forbes said.
Long Island held its own, with 25 other ZIP codes among the swankiest 500. Water Mill, ZIP 11976, checked in at No. 18 with an median price of $4,221,615.
Wainscott at No. 21, Bridgehampton at No. 26 and Westbury at No. 44 made the top 50.
