A two-acre Shelter Island property comes with landscaped gardens that were put in place when the late art critic Robert Hughes owned the home. It is on the market for $3.498 million.
Hughes, who was behind a TV series and book on modern art called, “The Shock of the New,” and his wife, Victoria, worked with garden designer Jeff Mendoza on the landscaping after moving into the house in 1990, according to an article on the website Garden Design. Hughes died in 2012.
The main home, a wood-shingled traditional built in the late 1800s, has three en-suite bedrooms and an open living area with French doors that open to a patio garden. There is also a one-bedroom carriage house above a garage, which is connected to the house by a second-floor walkway, and a separate one-bedroom guesthouse that opens to an in-ground pool.
Linda McCarthy of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.
