Southampton's 'Balcastle' lists for $3.695 million

Southampton's historic "Balcastle" and its four-story tower is on the market for $3.695 million.
Inspired by a castle in County Wicklow in Ireland, the Gothic-Revival-style home is made of brick and stone and contains Gothic windows, says listing agent Robert Lohman of The Corcoran Group. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, he adds.
The house was built in 1911 by J. Edward Elliston, a local artist and preservationist, says Lohman. The current owner is interior designer William Sofield, who bought the house two decades ago, says Lohman.
“We think it was built originally to be a school,” says Lohman, adding that the Elliston family donated land in Southampton that would become Elliston Park.
The castle’s tower has a hexagonal gazebo, a guest room and a terrace overlooking a pool. An octagonal pool house has a guest room and a bathroom.
The 2,900-square-foot, four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home is on a .43-acre lot.
