The original part of this home was built in the 1820s. We’ve been told it was a stagecoach stop. My husband was attracted to the beams that went from the basement to the second floor. They are the mainstay of the house. The dining room also has exposed beams.
"The home was neglected but had a unique feel and plenty of character. We knocked down a wall in the kitchen and made a great room. That was part of a big project in 2003-2004. We renovated both bathrooms, the kitchen, put in new windows, new siding and a roof.
"We went to Harned Brothers Saw Mill in Commack and got a hand-hewn beam for between the kitchen and living area. The hardwood floors are throughout the home, except the kitchen. During the holidays, it’s about 25 people in the dining room at two tables.
"The backyard is perfect for family barbecues. There’s a flagstone patio with brick edging. That was an anniversary present from my husband instead of jewelry. We have a detached 2 1⁄2-car garage and a large office above that.
"We’re in the Commack school district. My kids grew up here and were able to walk to school. It’s a very safe place to raise the family.”
