Why it's for sale: Charles, 37, who works for a software company, and his wife, Maya, 38, a stay-at-home mother to their two young daughters, are moving because Charles' job is being transferred out of state.

The family bought the 2,400-square-foot house in 2012. Charles says:

"The location is great. We're north of Sound Avenue and a quarter-mile from the Sound. The yard is beautiful, with mature landscaping, flower beds and trees. . . . The house has a lot of character. The post and beam is unique. The great room is bright, with eight skylights and two sliding doors. There's a reading room off the living room. The dining room, living room, kitchen and reading room are all connected with the 11-foot brick chimney in the center. . . .

"Three bedrooms are upstairs. The fourth one is downstairs and used as an office. We replaced doors and trim and completely renovated the first-floor bath with slate-looking ceramic tile. . . . We have an attached two-car garage.

"The two patios are spectacular for entertaining. One is off the great room, the other is off the dining room. The kitchen is clean, in good condition -- it's just 20 years old. . . . There's nice hardwood floors upstairs and ceramic tile in the great room, kitchen and hallway. . . . The neighborhood is great, on a dead end. . . . We're across the street from Roanoke Vineyards. There's a couple of million-dollar homes at the end of our street. . . . We love this place and really hate leaving."
