Why it’s for sale. Dick, 57, a retired insurance company executive and his wife, Karen, 61,  a homemaker, have bought a larger home in Garden City that has enough space to create separate living space for their handicapped daughter, Alison, 25, and her caregiver.

The Silvers’ 1951 farm ranch is on a 75-by-125-foot midblock lot and has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a finished basement and central air conditioning. Dick Silver says this about the house:

“It’s a spacious and gorgeous home that is truly barrier free . . . We have an accessible home with an open floor plan, two first-floor master suites, one with a fully accessible bathroom and roll-in shower . . . We have architecturally integrated ramps from sidewalks into the house with no barriers. We have wide doorways, flush saddles in wood floors and an eat-in kitchen that allows the wheelchair to go under the table . . . We’ve lived there since 1994 and did all the improvements for two reasons -- to make it more accessible and to improve the home . . . We turned a screened-in porch into a year-round family room and created an entrance by converting a double window into a wide entryway. We widened doorways.”

Karen Silver joins in: “The kitchen and all three bathrooms were renovated . . . and the second floor was renovated six years ago. It was a gut renovation . . . We have two very large rooms and a bathroom up there. One room has a built-in 12-foot-long desk with shelves above (attached to the wall). The house was re-sided in 2007 . . . and we added central air conditioning five years ago . . . We have a very private, nicely landscaped backyard with a brick patio and motorized awning that's off the family room . . . ”
