Apple’s iOS 9.1 update has some things you’ll like

Siri now offers suggestions on iPhones using iOS 9.1.
We’re in a quandary whenever Apple issues an update for its mobile operating system. Should we download it without waiting to hear the fallout about it? Inevitably, some updates we like, others not so much (for instance, the new task switcher carousel). Here are some new things you’ll find with iOS 9.1. Y
- You can now create checklists in the Notes app by making a list, then placing the cursor next to each item and tapping the circled check mark on the top left of the keyboard. Tap on the item on the list and it will be checked off.
- There are 184 new emojis, some seemingly useful: a cloud with, variously, lightning, rain or snow, a burrito, a hot dog, a cheese wedge, a taco, popcorn, an airplane arriving and an airplane departing. Others are a bit more exotic: a unicorn, an eye, an alembic, an amphora and linked paperclips.
- The search screen has changed. To access it, swipe the home screen to the right. It not only displays the search function, it also contains Siri’s suggestions of popular contacts, most-used apps and news. It also can search for places of interest nearby, though we found this function’s choices less than useful.
