Bratwurst, beer and brass bands will be on hand at the annual Bavarian Festival, which returns to Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square this weekend.
“People should expect an Oktoberfest-like atmosphere with wonderful live music,” says organizer George Mueller, 57, of Dix Hills.
The festival, which made its debut in 1975, has grown significantly in attendance in the past decade. Last year’s event attracted 3,000 patrons in one weekend.
This year, the Bavarian Festival will include sounds from Foehrer Musik Freunde, a Long Island–based German brass band, as well as the German party band Spitze, which will travel from Florida for the bash.
On Sunday, the Long Island brass band Blaskapelle will also take the stage, as will children and adults from Original Enzian, one of the oldest German folk dancing groups in America.
Throughout the weekend, there will be no shortage of food: bratwurst, franks, chicken fingers and potato pancakes. The family-friendly festival will feature handcrafted German souvenir items such as steins, a children’s candle-making station, inflatable rides and game booths for kids and adults.
Of course, the event isn’t entirely about fun and games — there will also be some competition. The Bavarian Triple Crown will measure dart accuracy and bell-ringing abilities and will cap off with Masskrugstemmen, a test of strength for how long one can hold a mug of beer.
Says Mueller, “I hope people come away with a bit of German/Bavarian culture and appreciation of music, dance and gemuetlichkeit [friendship].”
