For what may be the first time in his nearly four-decade broadcasting career, Al Roker overslept.

"After 39 years, it happened," he tweeted at 5:41 a.m. Tuesday. "I overslept and missed a show" -- ironically, "Wake Up with Al," the 6 a.m. weather report he hosts with Stephanie Abrams on The Weather Channel. "But [I] will be on time for 'Today,' " he added.

He was, indeed, telling colleagues Savannah Guthrie, Natalie Morales and Matt Lauer on air, "The alarm clock on my phone didn't go off. Somebody asked, 'What's your backup?' For 39 years I didn't need one." He then joked he might change the name of his TWC show to "Al, Wake Up!"

Roker, 58, also posted a brief video clip of himself on the "Today" set doing an exaggerated yawn.

Later that morning, he tweeted, "Wow. My oversleeping and missing 'Wake Up with Al' really has blown up on Twitter." He asked his followers to "tell me your oversleeping story."
