Ansel Elgort sets the record straight on his sexuality

Actor Ansel Elgort, who played the male lead opposite Shailene Woodley in this year's young-adult blockbuster "The Fault in Our Stars," has responded to rumors about his sexuality.

"Just in case it isn't clear . . . I like girls," he tweeted Wednesday. "A lot."

A few hours later, Elgort, 20, added, "Also let me say if I was gay I wouldn't hide it. Being gay or straight isn't bad or good it just IS. U are who you are. Be true to yourself."

The actor, whose films this year also included "Divergent" and "Men, Women & Children," did not indicate what prompted the tweets. In an Instagram photo in May, he and his "Fault in Our Stars" castmate Nat Wolff had spoofed the movie-poster image of that film's romantic teen couple, with Wolff in place of Woodley. The following month, Elgort signed on to play Van Cliburn in a projected film biography of the late, gay pianist.

Us Weekly said in August that Elgort and high-school sweetheart Violetta Komyshan, who both attended Manhattan's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, aka "the 'Fame' school," had broken up. The two, whom the magazine said had dated for some time, went together to the Valentino show at Paris Menswear Fashion Week in June, and they danced and kissed in a 2013 video for the fashion label Amanda Uprichard.

Elgort, who made his stage debut in 2012 opposite Alexis Bledel in the Off-Broadway play "Regrets," is the son of well-known fashion photographer Arthur Elgort and opera director Grethe Holby.
