Celebs support E! host battling cancer
Several entertainment figures expressed support Monday for reality-show star and E! News host Giuliana Rancic, who announced on NBC's "Today" that she has early-stage breast cancer.
Well-wishers on Twitter included Kourtney Kardashian, Lea Michele, Kelly Osbourne, Denise Richards, LeAnn Rimes, Ryan Seacrest and Donnie Wahlberg.
"Thank you for all ur love & support today," her husband, property developer and first-season "Apprentice" winner Bill Rancic, tweeted in response Monday. "G is reading all your messages. She will win this fight, I PROMISE, & be back better than ever!"
E! Entertainment said in a statement, "e are sending our love and support to Giuliana and applaud her for sharing her recent breast cancer diagnosis in the hope that it will encourage women everywhere to take necessary and preventative measures."
Rancic, 37, told "Today" co-anchor Ann Curry that during her third attempt to become pregnant through in vitro fertilization, "We sadly found out that I have [an] early [stage] of breast cancer. And it's been a shock." Her most recent fertility doctor, she said, insisted on her having a mammogram. "And I said, 'Why? I'm 36 years old. Why would I need a mammogram? I'm too young.' He said, 'I don't care if you're 26, 36, but I will not get you pregnant if [there is] possibly the small risk that you have cancer. Because if you get pregnant, all the hormones will accelerate the cancer.' "
Rancic said she will undergo surgery this week, then have six weeks of radiation. After that, she vowed to Curry, "I'm not gonna give up" the hope of pregnancy. "I want that baby. And what's amazing is that that baby will have saved my life."
