Transgendered activist Chaz Bono, the only child of the singing duo Sonny and Cher, has ended his engagement with fiancee Jennifer Elia.

Bono's spokesman Howard Bragman told TMZ.com Monday that the two "are no longer a couple." He said, "They leave this relationship with great love, respect and affection toward one another. No further amplification will be forthcoming and they ask that you respect their privacy at this time."

In a tweet Monday, Bono thanked fans for "your concern about our separation" and said he's "doing fine."

Bono, 42, and his longtime girlfriend Elia, 36, began their relationship when Bono was a woman named Chastity. They became engaged in 2009, although Bono did not formally present her with a ring until earlier this year. The proposal -- made on top of the Space Needle in Seattle -- was shown last month on the OWN documentary "Being Chaz."

Bono and Elia were photographed at public events together as recently as the 2011 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 10 in Los Angeles.

Bono's relationship with Elia was featured prominently in "Becoming Chaz," the documentary about his transition from female to male that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and later aired on OWN. In the film and elsewhere, Elia had discussed her reservations with Bono's decision to become a man.

"Hormones change people and I think he's leveled out right now," she told "Nightline's" Cynthia McFadden in May. "There was a period where I felt they were kind of spiked. The testosterone was like really machismo, and it was hard to deal with."

Elia has been living with Bono in West Hollywood, Calif., during which time she has been a graduate student.
