Retired motocross racer and former "The Surreal Life" star Carey Hart, husband of pop singer Pink, is facing criticism for an Instagram post in which he threatened to kill suspected looters in wildfire-ravaged Malibu, California.

"It's unfortunate that some people take advantage of others in a crisis," Hart, 43, wrote Tuesday, posting a black-and-white photo of a dozen armed men wearing gas masks or other mouth coverings, standing on a suburban street behind a handmade sign reading, "Looters will be shot on site!" [sic] and signed "PDC Posse."

"While the malibu fires have been burning," he continued, "some locals have been fighting off and defending their property against the fires. There have been sightings of looters breaking in to homes. Well, if you are a looter, think twice if you are heading back into malibu. #DefendYourLand #2ndamendment."

On his Twitter page, which carried the same message, Hart defended himself against a critic suggesting he was a fair-weather gun owner. "Let me guess, gun rights only apply to you when you need them? It'll be interesting to see your stance in a year or so," the person wrote. Responded Hart, "Really? My stance has changed? Funny I've had a ccw [concealed-carry weapon permit] for 15 years now." Hart added that he does not appear in the photo.

Others criticized him for promoting vigilantism and for the risk of misidentifying and shooting legitimate returnees. "Hey tough guy," wrote one, "it is far more likely that one of your white militia buddies is going to accidentally shoot himself, a loved one, or an innocent stranger mistaken as a looter than to deter an actual looter."

Hart and "Raise Your Glass" singer Pink, 39, born Alecia Moore, married in Costa Rica in January 2006. The two, who had met at the 2001 X Games, have two children: daughter Willow, 7, and son Jameson, 22 months.
