What's the next move for Katie Couric? Check back with her in "a few weeks," she said Wednesday, returning briefly to the "Today" show to promote her new book.

"I'm in the middle of figuring out where will be the place, and what would be the best job for me," she told her longtime co-host Matt Lauer, adding that "I love doing my job at 'CBS Evening News.' "

Couric was on the program she hosted for 15 years to talk about her book, "The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives."

Couric's contract at CBS ends June 4, and news reports -- none denied by CBS or her camp -- have said she'll launch a syndicated talk show in September. Other recent reports have noted that Lauer himself has discussed a joint venture with his former colleague, although his "Today" contract is reportedly not up until December 2012.

Lauer -- without noting that he, too, has suddenly become the subject of the rumors swirling around Couric -- asked about the appeal of syndication.

"There's a risk/reward ratio you have to weigh with everything," she said, but "just the greater freedom to pick subjects, to really dig deep and have a smart, intelligent conversation.

"Obviously I'm interested in medical and health information [and] in politics. The panoply, the opportunity to roll up your sleeves, is appealing."

She added that she'll make a formal decision about her future "in the next few weeks."
