Simon Cowell said in a radio interview in April that while pop star Mariah Carey would not be a judge on the American version of his UK singing competition "The X Factor," she still would be involved in some way. Now a report says that this might be as a mentor to the show's contestants.

"Mariah and Simon are great friends, and now [that] she has had her babies, it's very possible that she will be involved [in] some way in the later stages of the show," a source told Entertainment Weekly Tuesday. "She has always said she wanted to work with the show, so it's something they will certainly be discussing ideas for soon." The magazine mentioned mentorship without specifically citing it to the insider or another source.

Carey's representative was on vacation and could not be reached for comment. Her assistant did not respond to a follow-up request.

Carey, 41, from Huntington, had been pregnant during most of Cowell's preparation for the American "X-Factor." She and her husband, actor and radio personality Nick Cannon, had twins on April 30, the couple's third wedding anniversary.

"The X Factor" is scheduled to premiere Sept. 21 on Fox.

A preview of the show will open the network's coverage of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game on July 12 at 8 p.m.
