Recently installed "The Daily Show" host Trevor Noah was recovering from a successful emergency appendectomy on Wednesday and was expected to return to the comedic talk show Thursday night.

"We're happy to report the procedure went well, and he is currently recuperating from the surgery," Comedy Central said in a tweet that announced a rerun would air Wednesday night. "We expect he and the show will be back with an original episode tomorrow."

Following author and CNN host Fareed Zakaria as Monday's guest and feminist activist Gloria Steinem on Tuesday, Wednesday night's program was scheduled to have documentary filmmaker David Holbrooke, director of "The Diplomat," a documentary about his late father, U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke. Thursday night's announced guest is "American Crime" star Regina King, this year's Emmy Award winner for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.

Noah, 31, already shot his Nov. 22 Comedy Central special, "Trevor Noah: Lost in Translation," at The Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C., on July 25, before succeeding longtime "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart on Sept. 28. In the special, Noah "addresses major domestic and international events of the past year, sharing his outlook on the world today, including terrorism, racial tensions in America and what it was like being African and traveling into the United States during the Ebola crisis," said the network.

Some on social media questioned Comedy Central's expectation of Noah returning a day after surgery. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, then 39, had an emergency appendectomy the night of June 20, 2007, and returned to ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on June 26. Interior designer Nate Berkus, then host of a namesake syndicated lifestyle show, also was 39 when he had an emergency appendectomy on Nov. 30, 2010. He took nine days off after surgery.
