David Arquette has formally filed for divorce from Courteney Cox.

Arquette, 40, filed in a Los Angeles court Friday, TMZ.com reported Tuesday with a PDF posting of the public-record document. Citing "irreconcilable differences," the actor asked for joint legal and physical custody of his and Cox's daughter, Coco Riley Arquette, who turns 8 Wednesday.

The document is signed March 23, 2012, indicating that Arquette, who is representing himself, prepared it more than two months ago.

The couple, who met on the set of the film "Scream" in 1996, married June 12, 1999. They announced their breakup in October 2010, with the divorce filing giving their formal separation date as Dec. 31, 2011.

Arquette's filing asks for no spousal support, and notes that property rights are to be determined.

He and Cox, who turns 48 on Friday, appear to have remained amicable. Aside from working together on "Scream 4," released last year, Arquette guest-starred in May on the season finale of Cox's sitcom "Cougar Town."

Following the breakup, Arquette began an on-and-off relationship with "Entertainment Tonight" reporter Christina McLarty, according to Us Weekly, while Cox has remained unattached.

The same day he filed for divorce, Arquette arrived in Israel for his upcoming Travel Channel show with the working title "Mile High," said the Los Angeles Times.
