Fashion designer Kenneth Cole apologized Thursday for an offensive tweet he had posted on his company's Twitter page.

Cole had tweeted, "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo - KC."

With deaths mounting in Egypt's political riots, the joke struck many in the blogosphere as being in bad taste.

Apologizing on Facebook, Cole said, "I've dedicated my life to raising awareness about serious social issues, and in hindsight my attempt at humor regarding a nation liberating themselves against oppression was poorly timed and absolutely inappropriate."

The offending tweet was eventually removed.

Cole is married to Maria Cuomo, sister of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. Josh Vlasto, a spokesman for the governor, did not return a call for comment.
