Forbes ranks Jennifer Lawrence 2016’s highest-paid actress

For the second year in a row, Jennifer Lawrence tops the annual Forbes magazine list of highest-paid actresses, released Tuesday.

While her estimated $46 million earned between June 1, 2015, and June 1, 2016, is down from last year’s $52 million, the “Silver Linings Playbook” Oscar-winner did garner her fourth Academy Award nomination this year, for her lead role in “Joy,” inspired by the life of Long Island merchandising queen Joy Mangano. Lawrence, who recently turned 26, also saw her final “Hunger Games” feature and “X-Men: Apocalypse” released during that time.

Melissa McCarthy, who came in third last year with $23 million, rose to second place with $33 million. The comedian, 45, who just wrapped her Emmy-winning run on the CBS sitcom “Mike & Molly” and starred in this year’s “The Boss” and “Ghostbusters,” also has her own fashion label.

Most of the remainder make a great deal of their income from endorsement contracts. This year’s third-place finisher, 31-year-old Scarlett Johansson ($25 million), down a notch from last time, appears in Dolce & Gabbana ads in addition to her continued Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Natasha Romanoff in this year’s “Captain America: Civil War.” Jennifer Aniston, 47, with $21 million at No. 4, endorses the airline Emirates as well as Smartwater, Aveeno and Living Proof. Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, 41, who hits No. 6 with $16.5 million, is the face of Dior J’Adore perfume.

Non-U.S. actresses, which Forbes began including on the list last year, are China’s Fan Bingbing ($17 million), who dropped from No. 4 to No. 5, and 30-year-old Bollywood star Deepika Padukone ($10 million), who enters the list at No. 10.

Forbes derives its figures from speaking with agents, lawyers, producers and other industry professionals to estimate pretax gross income from acting, endorsements and other sources. The list, which numbered 18 last year, has returned to its traditional 10 spots.
