How tough is it to live off food stamps? Thanks to an online challenge going viral, one celebrity is going to find out.

Gwyneth Paltrow recently posted a photo on Facebook of groceries she had purchased.

"This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store -- and this is what families who rely on SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) have to live on for a week," the actress wrote in the photo caption. "We're going to walk in their shoes and see how far we get."

SNAP -- also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- offers nutrition assistance to millions of low-income families across the country.

The challenge comes as part of the #FoodBankNYCChallenge that's being promoted by famous chef Mario Batali.

It asks participants to “walk in someone else’s shoes” for one week and “understand what our friends and neighbors are going through,” Batali wrote on the Food Bank for New York City website

The challenge involves living off a food stamp budget of $1.38 per meal.
