Hudson announces engagement on 'Today'
Kate Hudson, who is in her third trimester of pregnancy, revealed yesterday on "Today" that she got engaged a week ago to her boyfriend Matthew Bellamy, lead singer and guitarist of the British alternative-rock band Muse.
The news came during an interview with Matt Lauer to promote her latest film, "Something Borrowed." Without preamble, Lauer asked the actress, "Could you place your hand in my hand for a second, please? I just want to see something." The camera then zoomed in on a diamond engagement ring large and sparkly enough that the "Today" anchor joked the cameramen were requesting that the lights in the ring be turned off.
"I'm so glad you noticed!" an exuberant Hudson, 32, said of the emerald-cut stone, which jewelry expert Michael O'Connor later told Us magazine was about 9 carats, set in platinum, and worth about $200,000.
"I haven't really announced it," Hudson said of the engagement. "I kind of felt like the announcing thing feels so silly, you know what I mean? I was just waiting for somebody to notice."
She told Lauer no wedding date has been set, but that the proposal, which "just happened a week ago," was "very sweet. It was very romantic."
She and Bellamy, also 32, have been together about a year. Hudson, daughter of film star Goldie Hawn, has a 7-year-old son, Ryder, from her marriage to Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson.
Lauer also asked Hudson about reports she's next playing the tragic, inadvertently pioneering 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace, in a film separate from "Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story," originally set for Lindsay Lohan and now starring Malin Akerman.
Laughing, Hudson said, "I am intrigued by playing Linda Lovelace. I don't know, obviously, with everything that's happened, when or how or where that is now going to happen, but it's definitely there and on the radar. It's a fascinating story."
