Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence charmed a roomful of reporters at the Academy Awards on Sunday night when asked about her tumble on the stairs as she went to accept the best actress Oscar.

"Was that on purpose? Absolutely!" she joked when asked what happened. "What do you mean what happened? Look at my dress!" she added in mock consternation at the voluminous Christian Dior Haute Couture gown before explaining, "I tried to walk up stairs in this dress, that's what happened. I think I just stepped on the fabric and they waxed the stairs."

In response to another journalist's question backstage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Lawrence, 22 -- who won for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook" -- said, "What went through my mind when I fell down? Uh -- a bad word that I can't say. That starts with F."

At last month's Screen Actors Guild Awards, Lawrence accidentally pulled back a panel on her gown while ascending steps, briefly revealing the tops of her thighs before the dress slipped back into place.

Sunday's Oscar telecast attracted 40.3 million viewers, up from 39.3 million in 2012, according to Nielsen.
