Jim Carrey university graduation speech moves audience to tears
Jim Carrey usually makes people laugh, but on Saturday he moved his audience to tears when he delivered an emotional commencement speech to the graduating class at the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.
The 52-year-old actor spoke about his late dad, Percy Carrey, who gave him the courage to take a chance on a career as a comedian. "My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believe that that was possible for him," Jim Carrey said in his speech. "And so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don't want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."
Carrey also received an honorary doctor of fine arts honoris causa degree from the school.
Back with 'Open Arms'
After more than 20 years of being retired from singing, former Journey front man Steve Perry, 65, performed Monday with alt-rock band Eels during the group's concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. First, Perry joined the Eels on one of their songs, and then they teamed up for two Journey tunes -- "Open Arms" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'."
