A day after performing at a charity event in St. Paul, Minn., the pop-rock trio the Jonas Brothers Wednesday canceled its upcoming tour, including an Oct. 20 show at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury and an Oct. 23 show at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom.

"There is a deep rift within the band," spokesman Jesse Derris, told People magazine. "There was a big a disagreement over their music direction." As for the band's future, he said, "It remains to be seen."

An argument ensued over the weekend, according to People, which said brothers Nick, 21, Joe, 24, and Kevin Jonas, 25, differed on the direction of the band and its music.

Ticket holders for the 19-date tour, which had been scheduled to start Friday, will be refunded at point of purchase.

On Tuesday, the Jonas Brothers and many other musicians, actors, activists and political figures appeared before nearly 18,000 student leaders at the Xcel Energy Center arena in St. Paul for the "We Day Minnesota" event hosted by the charity Free The Children. The band performed its recently released single "Pom Poms" and Joe Jonas told the crowd of his experiences volunteering with Free The Children to help build schools in Kenya.

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel of Milwaukee, published Wednesday and conducted before the tour cancellation was announced, Joe Jonas said the band was hoping to self-release the album "V" in November, and suggested it would veer away from the brothers' boy-band appeal. "Songs on that record, some are sexual, some are about heartbreak," he said.

He conceded in that interview the band is no longer headlining stadiums. "But I'm not dying to do that," he said. "We're wanting to make music we're really proud of, that we can, at the end of the day, be excited about."
