Judy Blume recovering from breast cancer

Author Judy Blume blogged on Sept. 5, 2012 that she was diagnosed in June that year with ductal carcinoma, a type of breast cancer. Blume underwent a mastectomy and breast reconstruction; she further revealed in the same blog post that she had also undergone a hysterectomy seventeen years prior to her breast cancer diagnosis that had revealed early-stage cervical cancer, caused by HPV. Best-selling young-adult novelist Judy Blume, whose books include "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" and "Superfudge," wrote on her blog Wednesday that she is recovering from a mastectomy for breast cancer.
"Now it's one month post-surgery," Blume, 74, wrote. "I'm still in NY and feeling stronger every day."
Blume said she canceled a five-week trip to Italy, "where I was hoping to finish my new book" after a June 12 visit for a routine sonogram led to her having a biopsy. She learned days later she had ductal carcinoma, and had a breast removed and reconstructed on July 30.
It was her second cancer surgery, she wrote. "I'd had a hysterectomy seventeen years ago (cervical cancer caused by HPV)."
She noted that her cancer hadn't been detected by a mammogram or regular physical exam because she has dense breast tissue.
