A confrontation in Southampton early Sunday morning allegedly involving members of Justin Bieber's entourage sent one man to the hospital and prompted a police investigation.

Southampton Town police said in a statement to Newsday that the unnamed man was at the South Pointe nightclub on Tuckahoe Lane at about 3:45 a.m. when "he was involved in an altercation and physically assaulted by subjects unknown to him but [whom] he believes . . . to be members of Justin Bieber's security staff who he stated were also at the nightclub."

Police said they received a call at 12:34 p.m. Sunday from Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, informing them that the hospital was treating a man for minor injuries "he allegedly sustained after being assaulted" at the club. After an initial interview by police at the hospital, the man later gave Southampton Town police a formal statement.

A spokeswoman for South Pointe told Newsday that pop star Bieber, 19, "arrived with about 14 people around 2:45 [early Sunday] and he stayed in the club for about an hour, dancing, enjoying himself. When he was leaving a lot of people followed him outside to take pictures and I think people were getting a little pushy and shove-y."

The incident, she said, occurred "off-premises down the street after Justin's security confronted an individual after their car was struck with a rock. The police have confirmed there was no incident inside the club or outside in the parking lot. We're cooperating with the police."

Bieber's representative at his label, Universal Music, did not return Newsday's request for comment.
