Kim Kardashian files for divorce

Eschewing separation, Kim Kardashian filed directly for divorce Monday morning, effectively ending the celebutante's blink-and-miss-it marriage to pro basketball player Kris Humphries -- just 72 days after an extravagant, $10-million wedding that became the basis for a two-night, four-hour TV special.
"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage," Kardashian, 31, said in a statement to E! News. "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."
Her divorce petition was filed Monday at Los Angeles County Superior Court by high-powered attorney Laura A. Wasser, whose clients have included Angelina Jolie, Ryan Reynolds, Maria Shriver and Britney Spears. The reason checkmarked on the form was the standard "irreconcilable differences."
As for Humphries, the hoopster says he was blindsided. "I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce," he said in a statement Monday. "I'm committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work."
Meanwhile, radio host Ryan Seacrest, an executive producer of the various Kardashian reality shows, said on his KIIS-FM program, "I've spoken to her briefly, and she says she's sad and," he added vaguely, "got caught up in all that was going on."
Rumors about a troubled marriage between Kardashian, 31, and Humphries, 26, a forward with the New Jersey Nets, began dogging the couple shortly after their celebrity-studded Aug. 20 wedding at a Montecito, Calif., estate. The two have appeared solo in public without their wedding rings, each shrugging off the significance of that.
Kardashian was denying the rumors' validity as late as Saturday, when she appeared as Batman villainess Poison Ivy at a Halloween party in New York and told People magazine, "Something I really prepared Kris for [was] to let him know that no matter what we do, there's going to be rumors. It used to really upset me, and now I don't even think about it."
However, she conceded to People last week that the two of them living with her sister's family for the show "Kourtney & Kim Take New York" was "not ideal because you're newlyweds and you want privacy." In a preview for that show, premiering later this month, Kardashian gripes to Humphries, "How am I going to have my career and live in Minnesota?," his home state. "Baby," he replies, "by the time you have kids and they're in school, nobody will probably care about you."
The filing specifies that the two have a prenuptial agreement, and that she would like each of them to pay for his and her own lawyers.
