Luke Perry speaks movingly of '90210' co-star Shannen Doherty
Former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Luke Perry spoke movingly over the weekend about his cancer-stricken fellow star, Shannen Doherty.
“None of us are up here today without Shannen,” Perry, 50, told the audience during a cast reunion at the fan convention REWindCon in Bloomingdale, Illinois, on Saturday, reported Us Weekly.
“She’s been through a lot,” he continued. “She’s not doing well right now but sometimes her contributions are minimized. She’s been thrown under the bus,” Perry said of criticisms that followed Doherty during her early career. “I’ve been accused of driving it,” he added without offering details. “But she’s a very big part of the success of this show. She taught me a lot. I’m glad she was my scene partner,” playing high-schooler Brenda Walsh opposite his Dylan McKay on the 1990-2000 Fox series, on which she starred for the first four seasons. “She was great at what she did in the character with me.”
Doherty, 45, revealed in August of last year that she had developed breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy this past May, and said this August that she would be having chemo and radiation treatments. The actress, who went on to star in the series “Charmed” and in several episodes of the 2008-2009 reunion series “90210,” has shared her progress regularly on social media.
Also on Saturday, fellow former cast-mate Jennie Garth, 44, wrote of Doherty on Instagram, “o my soul sister @theshando strongest lady i’ve ever known. then and now. i used to be threatened by your spirit, now i’m in awe of it. you’ve taught me a lot about speaking my mind and not being afraid of my power. i’m so grateful that young me got to be friends with you. but especially ‘old’ me! the best is yet to come on this crazy journey!! love you! #fightlikeagirl #fightlikebrenda #aries.”
Despite difficulties on the set of their old show, the two women have become close friends. Doherty reposted Garth’s comments, writing, “I’m so proud of this friendship and the mutual respect and admiration we have for each other.”
