Madonna had some measured words for fellow pop star and uber-fan Lady Gaga over the weekend, in an interview with a French-language Belgian newspaper. But the Material Girl's spokeswoman Wednesday said it's much ado about nothing.

In an interview Saturday with the paper Le Soir at the Venice Film Festival -- where her directorial effort "W.E." has met with negative reviews -- Madonna answered a question comparing Gaga's fannish admiration of her with a similar situation between her movie's two main characters.

"As for Lady Gaga," she said, according to one translation, "I do not have a comment to make about her obsessions having to do with me, because I do not know whether that rests on something profound or superficial."

Liz Rosenberg, Madonna's representative, told E! News no slight was intended. "I do know that [Madonna] has said many supportive things about Gaga over the years." Speaking to Us Weekly, Rosenberg said flatly, "She didn't diss Gaga."

Lady Gaga's representative did not return E! News' request for comment.
