Pop star Mariah Carey, while stopping short of confirming her reported breakup with fiance James Packer, did not disagree with Ellen DeGeneres when the talk-show host said on Wednesday’s show that the couple was “not together anymore.”

“Now it’s a whole friggin’ thing,” replied Carey, 47.

“Now it’s a whole friggin’ thing,” DeGeneres, 58, agreed. She then asked if Carey — who became engaged to casino mogul and Hollywood producer Packer, 49, on Jan. 21, followed by rumors last month of the engagement being called off — was doing all right “mentally and are you happy? How are you?”

“I think I’m doing well,” the Huntington-born, Greenlawn-raised Carey answered. “How are you?” After DeGeneres assured that she was doing “great,” Carey responded vaguely, “No, I’m actually, it — y’know, everything happens for a reason. Things are the way they are.”

DeGeneres went on to note Packer had not wanted to appear in Carey’s upcoming E! reality series, “Mariah’s World,” but that “he’s in it. You see him . . .”

“Allegedly,” Carey replied coldly.

“Allegedly he didn’t want to be in it? Or allegedly he’s in it? He’s in it,” DeGeneres pointed out. “because I saw it.”

“You did. That’s what I’m saying,” Carey answered. “It’s kind of difficult to talk about at this moment,” she said, dropping the subject, “so I’m just going to compliment you on [the talk-show set’s holiday] decorations once again, because they are fabulous, and I’m here among them.”

In October, after reports Carey and Packer had been apart for a month after arguing in Greece and that their relationship appeared to be fracturing, the singer’s representative told “Entertainment Tonight”: “They are trying to work it out. Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together. They are discussing it, and plan to release an official statement together about their future.” No statement has yet been given.
