A visibly devastated Marie Osmond confided to Oprah Winfrey Thursday about her son Michael's suicide, rebutting Internet suggestions that he was gay and spotlighting the dangers of clinical depression.

"I had spoken to him the evening before" his eighth-floor leap to his death in Los Angeles in February, she told the talk-show host. "It was concerning to me because it was the first time I had heard him start to cry and say he was alone, that he had no friends, that he felt despair."

After breaking down into quiet sobs, she continued. "I said, 'Mike I'm gonna be there Monday. And it's gonna be OK.' But depression doesn't wait till Monday."

Osmond, 51, revealed the contents of the suicide note that Michael, 18, had left for a friend. "He basically said that he knew that morning was the last time he would get up, brush his teeth, eat breakfast, make his bed, get dressed. He had made the decision, I guess. And that he loved his family. But . . . the pain was so intense."

Winfrey asked the singer about bloggers' speculation that Michael was gay and that this conflicted with his Mormon faith. Osmond, replied, "My son was not gay. He wanted to be married and have a family. And it wouldn't matter if he [was]. I have a daughter who is gay."

Michael had begun abusing drugs at age 12, Osmond said, but as Winfrey noted, a coroner's report said no drugs were in his system.

Osmond performed "Pie Jesu," a choral motet often included in the Requiem Mass. After breaking down and stopping the music, she composed herself, began again, and completed the piece.
