Matthew McConaughey engaged

Matthew McConaughey is getting married: As the actor posted on his WhoSay.com page on Christmas Day, "just asked camila to marry me, merry Christmas."

Accompanying McConaughey's message was a photo of the actor -- who shaved his head earlier this month, tweeting "new year, new crop" -- in front of a Christmas tree kissing his longtime girlfriend Camila Alves, a Brazil-born model and the mother of his son Levi, 3, and daughter, Vida, who turns 2 on Jan. 3.

McConaughey, 42, and Alves, 29, met in a Los Angeles bar in 2006 and began dating soon afterward, according to Us Weekly.

The actor, who first became known with 1993's "Dazed and Confused" and has since starred in films including "Contact" (1997), "The Wedding Planner" (2001) and "The Lincoln Lawyer" (2001), told Esquire magazine in March that his and Alves' current home in Malibu represents the commitment of their union.

"Before this, I had a super home in the Hollywood Hills," he said. "But that house was mine. And yeah, we coulda gone in there right away. Camila would have said, 'Fine, don't change a thing.' But I thought, I found the woman I wanna do it with, the woman I wanna make a family with, hopefully live our life out together. She needs to have 50 percent of that. I mean, it's a lot easier for me to be at 100 percent. I'd always been 100 percent. It's braver for me at 50 percent."

Alves hosted season three of Bravo's hairstyling competition "Shear Genius" in 2010. She and her mother own and design the Muxo line of handbags. McConaughey, who most recently starred in director William Friedkin's as-yet-unreleased "Killer Joe," plays support to Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum in Steven Soderbergh's male-stripper movie "Magic Mike," due out in June.
