Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, made an unannounced appearance at the British Fashion Awards on Monday to honor her wedding-gown designer.

In her widely reported prepared speech before presenting the British Designer of the Year Womenswear honor to Clare Waight Keller of the storied French fashion house Givenchy, the expectant duchess, 37, called the U.K. "my new home.”

The former "Suits" star told the audience: "We have a deep connection to what we wear. Sometimes it's very personal, sometimes it's emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in really being able to understand that it's about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women.”

She added, "When we choose to wear a certain designer, we're not just a reflection of their creativity and their vision, but we're also an extension of their values, of something in the fabric, so to speak, that is much more meaningful."

Keller, accepting the award, told the audience, "This woman is so amazing. I got to know Meghan on such a personal level," she said, adding that she was honored "to have someone like that trust you in an incredible moment in their life" or "on such a personal moment in their life," according to different transcripts.

Rockville Centre-raised comedy star Amy Schumer, who also is expecting, expressed admiration for the duchess' sleek black one-shoulder Givenchy gown. Schumer posted on Instagram a photo of Markle from the ceremony with the duchess’ head cropped out, joking in the caption, "Loved my outfit during my set tonight!"
