Derek Hough will be dancing with a star but not on "Dancing With the Stars" when the show's new season begins in March. The three-time champion has been signed to star in a dance movie with South Korean pop sensation BoA.
"I'm taking season 12 off," Hough told People magazine Monday. Variety reported Friday that Hough will star in "Cobu 3D," a Romeo-and-Juliet story involving rival New York City families who own underground nightclubs, where two young lovers compete in a dance contest.
Hough, 25, plays a New Orleans street dancer who moves to New York and falls for an Asian drummer, played by Boa Kwon, 24, who as BoA ("Beat of Angel") is a top-selling singer in the Korean Wave, or hallyu, pop-culture movement. Her agency, SM Entertainment, is a producer of the film, along with Korea's CJ Entertainment and American producer Robert Cort ("Save the Last Dance").
"People will see a much edgier side of me and these other styles of dance I'm capable of doing," said Hough, who has begun training and refreshing his tap-dancing skills for the movie, which is planned for an early 2012 release. Shooting in New York and Toronto is expected to start this spring.
"Dancing With the Stars" executive producer Conrad Green told People, "We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from [the show] to pursue his film career, and look forward to having him return to the show in the fall."
As for Hough, he says, "I will be making it back to 'Dancing With the Stars' in the fall. I'm just taking a little break and taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist."
Hough and his partner Jennifer Grey won the most recent edition of "Dancing."
