Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, co-piloted an RAF helicopter early Sunday to help rescue survivors of the cargo ship Swanland, which capsized in the Irish Sea off the Llyn Peninsula of North Wales.

The Sunday Telegraph said William was among those responding to a 2 a.m. mayday by the captain after a crashing wave in a force-eight gale 20 miles off the coast rolled the ship and cracked its hull. The limestone-bearing vessel, owned by a British company but flagged to the Cook Islands and crewed by Russians, was quickly reduced to debris.

The prince's helicopter winched two sailors to safety. Another is dead and five remain missing.
