Saying an Instagram message she posted inadvertently fed rumors she had an affair with singer Beyoncé’s husband, music mogul Jay Z, fashion designer Rachel Roy now flatly denied the claims.
“I want to put the speculation and rumors to rest,” she told People magazine in a statement Tuesday. “My Instagram post was meant to be fun and lighthearted, [but] it was misunderstood as something other than that. There is no validity to the idea that the song references me personally. There is no truth to the rumors.”
Roy — the ex-wife of producer Damon Dash, a former business partner of Jay Z — was targeted by Beyoncé fans on social media when her Instagram post Saturday appeared to respond to “Sorry,” a track from Beyoncé’s new album, “Lemonade,” a collection of songs centering on marital and relationship strife.
The lyrics include: “He only want me when I’m not on there / He better call Becky with the good hair.” On her now-private Instagram account, Roy, 42, wrote, “Good hair don’t care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. live in the light #nodramaqueens.”
“Consequently, online haters have targeted me and my daughters in a hurtful and scary manner, including physical threats,” her statement continued. “As a mother — and I know many mothers would agree — I feel that bullying in any form is harmful and unacceptable. I would hope that the media sees the real issue here — the issue of cyber bullying — and how it should not be tolerated by anyone.”
People said Roy appeared in public Monday for the first time since the social-media attacks began, arriving with a suitcase at her home in Los Angeles after having canceled an appearance that day, citing a personal emergency.
