Report: Cruz, Cruise split over religion Actress Penelope Cruz began the process of becoming a Scientologist when she dated Tom Cruise, but the two split up when she would not desert her Buddhist faith, Vanity Fair reports. Cruz -- who dated her "Vanilla Sky" co-star from 2001 to 2004 -- began taking Scientology courses and attending "auditing" sessions. These consist of questioning by a counselor and can involve a device called the Hubbard Electropsychometer, which measures the interviewee's electrical resistance. The magazine added that Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige called Cruz -- now married to Javier Bardem -- a "dilettante" for not agreeing to give up her religion, leading to the breakup.
