British actor Russell Brand turned himself in to New Orleans police Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, E! Online reports.

Brand was booked on one count of simple criminal damage to property valued at $700 after he broke a window by allegedly throwing a paparazzo's cellphone through it. Brand had grabbed the phone from a photographer who was attempting to take his picture from a car.

Brand was in New Orleans filming a movie, screenwriter Diablo Cody's ("Juno") directorial debut.

In a Twitter posting on Wednesday, Brand addressed the incident, writing "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory."

As of yesterday evening, Brand was being held on $5,000 bail, according to Us Weekly.

Brand and pop star Katy Perry finalized their divorce in February after just a little over a year of marriage.
