Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds to split up
Even having her husband named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive last month wasn't enough to keep actress Scarlett Johansson from ending her two-year marriage to "Green Lantern" star Ryan Reynolds.
"The big problem with their relationship is the distance," a source told Us magazine yesterday, saying the split came at Johansson's behest. "They spend a lot of time apart when they are working. . . . She's been unhappy for a while." While the Us account said the couple have been separated for about two weeks, a source told People magazine the couple had separated six months ago.
Reynolds, 34, and Johansson, 26, released a statement saying, "After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
Rumblings of trouble surfaced in media accounts last month, when Reynolds did not attend when Johansson hosted "Saturday Night Live." At the time, he said he had to attend a New York charity event, but instead spent the evening at Soho House in Los Angeles.
One of the couple's last joint appearances at an event was at the 2010 Tony Awards in June, where Johansson, whose role in a revival of "A View from the Bridge" netted her the featured actress in a play award. In her acceptance speech, she acknowledged "my Canadian, whom I live with: Ryan, thank you for becoming a theater widower."
Reynolds and Johansson began dating in April 2007 and were wed in September the following year.
