A federal judge in Newark on Thursday handed prison sentences to Joe and Teresa Giudice of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey," who had pleaded guilty to mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud.

Giuseppe "Joe" Giudice -- who also pleaded guilty to failure to pay taxes on $1 million -- was sentenced to 41 months. Teresa Giudice was given 15 months, beginning Jan. 5. The sentences will be staggered so that one parent will be free to care for the couple's four children. Together the couple must pay $414,000 in restitution, The Associated Press reports.

Before his sentencing, Joe Giudice read a statement saying, "I stand here humiliated before the court and my family and society. I disgraced many people, including my wife and four daughters. I take full responsibility for my actions. I promise to be a better person."

The couple had declared bankruptcy in 2009 but failed to declare such assets as rental property as well as income including the full amount of Teresa Giudice's TV-show pay. Prosecutors filed fraud charges in July 2013, saying the couple for years had falsified documents in order to obtain millions in loans and mortgages.
