Fox isn't commenting, but sources including Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton say his band's lead singer, Steven Tyler, has formally signed to be one of the new judges on "American Idol."
"Steven is doing 'American Idol.' The ink is dry on that," Hamilton told The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday. "Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don't know if 'American Idol' will be rock 'n' roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler."
A music industry source as well told E! News Wednesday that Tyler, 62, had officially signed on to be a judge on the show's 10th season. He's expected to join the production in time for the audition tapings next month.
Tyler asked for considerably less money, said the Hollywood Reporter, than the "north of $20 million" demanded by fellow candidate Jennifer Lopez, who per most accounts is out of the running. The trade publication said country star Shania Twain reportedly is now in talks to be a judge.
Meanwhile, Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, who have had a contentious relationship with each other through the years, were involved in another incident during a Tuesday night concert in Toronto, according to TMZ.com reports.
During a performance of "Love in an Elevator," Tyler playfully bumped Perry. But then Perry retaliated by bumping Tyler, which sent him face first into the crowd.
Tyler jumped back on stage, with Perry's assistance, and then told the crowd: "It ain't gonna happen again, baby."
