As Mark Twain might have said, the reports of her marriage are greatly exaggerated.

Elizabeth Taylor took to Twitter yesterday, writing on her DameElizabeth account, "The rumors regarding my engagement simply aren't true. Jason is my manager and dearest friend. I love him with all my heart."

Us magazine had said Friday that an anonymous "source close to the Oscar-winning actress" claimed that Taylor, 78, the iconic star of "National Velvet," "Giant," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and other films, was planning to wed her African-American manager, Jason Winters, 49, of Sterling Winters Management.

Another anonymous "insider" was quoted as saying, "It's no secret that they've been together forever and are in love, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they were engaged."

Or, perhaps, it would. The British newspaper The Daily Mail quoted - by name - Martin Delaney, the founder of a San Francisco AIDS charity of which Winters is a longtime patron, who said, "I don't know how a marriage between them could take place. That's not the kind of relationship they've got. I find it all pretty amusing.

"Elizabeth is friends with Jason and his long-term friend, Erik Sterling. Jason and Erik are both on the board of the charity and they have a house in Hawaii. I know Elizabeth is very close to Jason, but the idea of them marrying is silly stuff."

Taylor, whose last film was the 2001 TV-movie "These Old Broads," with Shirley MacLaine, Debbie Reynolds and Joan Collins, has been married eight times.
